Good morning Loveland!

We at the Reporter-Herald decorated the newsroom this past Wednesday, which means that Christmas is officially ready to start. Have you decorated your home yet, and are the stockings hung with care? Weigh in on our Facebook page.

For those who are interested, next week is my birthday, and presents will be accepted at the Berthoud office. (Not really, don’t do that.)

As we kick into the weekend, let’s get started.

Wondering about the weather?

Today the sun will be shining and the high close to 46 degrees, with winds up to 24 mph, a 30% chance of snow in the evening and a low near 24 degrees. Luckily, little snow accumulation is expected.

Saturday brings a 40% chance of snow, with a high near 36 degrees and a low of 29 degrees, and partly sunny skies. The evening brings partly cloudy skies and a 30% chance of snow.

Sunday continues the snow trend with a 40% chance of the flakes, a high of 29 degrees and a low around 11 degrees.

Animal of the Week: The coyote

Colorado is home to many fascinating animals, so we at the Reporter-Herald would like to take some time each week to feature some of our favorites.
This week, we’re featuring the coyote.  These dog-sized predators are quite commonly found in Northern Colorado and are often seen as pests by farmers and pet owners. They can often be heard crying in the distance, howling at the moon like spooky wolves in a manner that characterizes the western aesthetic. This cry can be used to communicate with pack members.

They have very few natural predators, meaning that in the wild they can live 10-14 years, and in captivity can live up to 20 years. These monogamous animals have 3-12 pups at one time, all of which are blind at birth. As they age, Coyotes develop excellent night vision and a great sense of smell.

Native Americans believed coyotes to be one of the most clever animals, which aligns with their resourceful nature that has allowed them to thrive in encouragingly more urban areas they once called home.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has several tips for coexisting with wildlife, such as coyotes.
